Marketing for the film takes an unexpected turn, fans aren’t happy about it

Chris Nolan's “Batman” franchise is miles away from the comic books that inspired it, in that it's more realistic than any other “Batman” film. “The Dark Knight Rises,” the final installment, has just turned back to its origins in these new photos.

In what is certainly a first for the franchise, promotional images for the third and final installment have a definite comic book feel about them, from the way the characters are pictured, to whatever it is they're portrayed doing.

Take for instance the first photo, of Batman and Bane locked in what could be either a life and death confrontation or a fancy mid-air dance routine.

As Pajiba also points out, this is not the kind of marketing fans expect from this particular “Batman.”

“One of the big appeals of Nolan’s Batman universe (at least to non-comic book geeks) is that it seems based in reality, but yeah: Comic-book-y promotional images are neat. Sort of,” the e-zine writes.

“The marketing people have to do something. The Dark Knight Rises is a movie that will totally sell itself. That’s got to feel like the most useless job in marketing. It’s going to be the biggest movie of the year, no matter what you do,” Pajiba adds.

As such, these images are redundant. Neat but utterly useless – and somehow misleading as well. Check them out.
