Pictures taken during a hands-on session following Verizon’s event yesterday cropped up iOS 4.2.5 listings on the Settings->General-About screens of CDMA iPhones, where several other software and hardware indicators can be spotted.

According to an image published by tech-site Engadget, the CDMA-capable iPhone 4 set to make a splash on Verizon’s network was running iOS 4.2.5, a new version of Apple’s mobile operating system.

Current-generation GSM handsets running on AT&T’s network are at iOS 4.2.1, as the latest version of the software.

Reportedly, the new iOS was designed specifically for the demo units of the Verizon iPhone 4 on display at the event in New York.

The device boasts personal hotspot functionality through the iOS 4.2.5 software, an ability that will permit users to turn their iPhone 4 into a mobile hotspot.

“iPhone 4 is the most innovative phone in the world, featuring Apple’s stunning Retina display, the highest resolution display ever built into a phone resulting in super crisp text, images and video, and FaceTime, which makes video calling a reality,” Apple & Verizon officially stated yesterday.

“iPhone 4 on Verizon Wireless will also include new Personal Hotspot capabilities allowing customers to use iPhone 4 to connect up to five Wi-Fi enabled devices,” the two companies clarified.

The Verizon iPhone is not only equipped with an extra chip to support CDMA connectivity, but also a new antenna design.

Besides these custom-tailored hardware changes, the new iPhone 4 features the same 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, HD video recording, Apple’s A4 chip, a 3-axis gyro, as well as the glass and stainless steel design.

The smartphone will be available on the Verizon Wireless network beginning Thursday, February 10 for $199 for the 16GB model and $299 for the 32GB model.

The purchase is tied to a new, two-year contract with the carrier.
