Splashtop Inc., a company focused on optimizing the computing experience so that everyone can access content and applications, has announced plans to demonstrate a new iPad app for education at the 2011 International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Conference in Philadelphia, PA.

Dubbed Splashtop Whiteboard, the software is built on top of Splashtop Remote Desktop, another iPad app developed by Splashtop.

Available as a $9.99 dollar download from the App Store, Splashtop Whiteboard allows teachers and students to turn their iPad into an interactive whiteboard.

The developer says students can watch Flash media with fully synchronized video and audio by connecting to their classroom computer over Wi-Fi.

And while students will also be able to control their favorite applications and annotate lesson content all from an iPad, teachers will have the added benefit of interacting with students pretty much anywhere in the classroom.

“The iPad is becoming a powerful education tool, augmenting existing interactive whiteboards from Polyvision, Promethean, and Smart Technologies,” said Mark Lee, CEO and co-founder of Splashtop.

“Coupled with Splashtop Whiteboard, now schools everywhere can move one step closer to completing their 1:1 iPad initiatives,” added Lee.

Commenting on the release, Peter H. Reynolds, creator of Animation-ish and founder of FableVision Learning, said:

"Flash apps on the iPad? The only thing cooler – combine the Splashtop Whiteboard app with the #1 kids’ animation tool to help boost literacy skills in the classroom. And now they can annotate their work? Wow, classrooms just got a whole lot more creative!”

Splashtop Whiteboard normally goes for $19.99. In celebration of the app’s debut, the company is selling it for $9.99 during the ISTE show.

The app is compatible solely with the Apple iPad (including the second-generation version) and requires iOS 3.2 or later to run.
