That means it can act as a host, a hub of sorts, when traveling wherever

Card readers aren't the sort of thing you'd expect to behave as USB flash drives/hard drives/SSDs, but that isn't something that deterred Apacer when making the AM701.

That's right, the AM701 card-reader possesses the OTG (On-The-Go) function, or USB OTG as it is broadly known.

Provided tablet PCs and smartphone support OTG function as well, they will be able to use the card reader as an external storage device.

Normally, card readers are employed with PCs, to transfer whatever photos you shot with your camera or songs/recordings you took with your phone, voice recorder, etc.

Apacer took things a step further. Whereas tablets and phones would already be able to access the data on the cards inside the reader, the AM7012 can play another role.

Specifically, the AM701 can hold microSD, microSDHC and microSDXC cards and become an extension of whatever flash memory phones and tablets already have.

Users can use it for backing up the files on their slates/phones, to play music or videos, or check out photos, basically anything that integrated storage can do.

The on-the-go function makes the AM701 Apacer card reader much easier to use and, thus, convenient.

"The built-in storage capacity limitation of mobile devices has always been a priority concern for consumers. Apacer's AM701 card-reader supports read/write of memory cards such as microSD, microSDHC, microSDXC," said Chang, Chia-Kun, assistant general manager of Apacer's digital storage application unit.

Apacer's AM701 comes in blue, green, pink, red and yellow. At least for the caps protecting the Universal Serial Bus. Speaking of which, the white body is made of ABS glossy plastic material that is reasonably scratch- and dirt- resistant.

Sadly, USB 3.0 isn't supported, only USB 2.0, which means the top data transfer rate is of 480 Mbps. The price is of around $6 / €4, so that is a pretty convenient buy if you can find it. Sadly, we only have located it at some Malaysian retailers so far.
