Amazon will probably refresh last year’s HDX tablet soon

Amazon made a few headlines not so long ago when it launched its mystic 3D-capable phone. But the device hasn't been out into the wild long enough to make an impact and some voices claim that the handheld unit is not really getting a lot of love from reviewers.

As Amazon struggles to enter the smartphone segment, we can say without a shadow of doubt that Kindle Fire tablets and eReaders are the products that bring the most revenue for the US tech giant.

Since the latest Kindle tablet, the HDX launched back in 2013, the news that Amazon might be working on an updated version of the tablet doesn’t actually come as a shock. According to the latest rumors, that’s indeed the case.

A new Kindle Fire HDX device has been spotted in the AnTuTu database, showing us that Amazon is planning to slip under the hood a more beefy processor.

For the time being, we are being confronted only with the 8.9-inch version, so we don’t know if the device maker is planning to offer a 7-inch version as well.

Like many smartphone manufacturers these days that tend to focus onto rolling out several updated products of their flagship devices, Amazon might soon provide us with a Kindle Fire HDX tablet running on a more advanced processor.

The current HDX model that is available on the market comes equipped with a Snapdragon 800 SoC with 4 Krait 400 cores clocked at 2.2GHz and Adreno 330 GPU.

But the new HDX model will arrive with a Snapdragon 805 quad-core processor clocked at 2.5GHz per core plus improved Adreno 420 GPU.

Putting aside the inner chip bump, the upcoming tablet remains the same as the current HDX model.

So customers will be getting an 8.9-inch tablet with a beautiful resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels. Everything onboard will be fitted with 2GB of RAM and customers will find the usual two cameras (1MP in front and 8MP on the back).

Interestingly, the AnTuTu listing shows that the new HDX tablet will run Android 4.4.4, but knowing Amazon’s track record it will probably be a forked version of Android with Amazon’s services pushed to the forefront.

For the time being, we can’t really tell you when the new version will be released into the wild, because the listing doesn't provide us with that information.

While we wait for Amazon to make an announcement, you can take the time to consider whether or not you’d be interested in owning such a device.
