Publisher Atari and developer Cryptic Studios have announced that they are working on Neverwinter, a new fantasy based role playing game that is set to arrive on the PC, dispelling rumors that talked about the two companies working on yet another MMO based on a popular intellectual property.

Jack Emmert, the current leader of the team working on Neverwinter at Cryptic Studios, told Massively that they are currently suffering to the structure of the game as an OMG, Online Massive Game.

He went on to detail the concept by saying that “We'll have worlds that are certainly cooperative. How many players will be in a particular area will be a little bit up in the air. There will be, for lack of a better word, dungeons, that you and your teammates go in, that will just be for you and your teammates, so more like a traditional instance would be in an MMO.”

He further elaborated that, “Players will have lots of controls over whether something's public or private and so forth, and we're working on those various options now. As we go into beta and get feedback from people actually using the tools, we'll add more, but the idea of a large zone with hundreds of players, that isn't what Neverwinter is, no.”

The Cryptic developer has confirmed that more than one storyline will be included in the new Neverwinter but has said that the exact number is not set in stone and will depend on how the development process goes.

He also revealed that players will need to be always connected to the servers of Atari in order to play Neverwinter, with no offline mode planned at the moment.

Neverwinter will be accompanied by a set of three novels written by well known fantasy author R.A. Salvatore, telling a story set in the same universe, and by a table top role playing game from Wizards of the Coast.
