Neptune 4.1, a Linux operating system fully based upon Debian "Wheezy," except for a newer kernel and some drivers, is the first maintenance release in the series and is available for download.

The ZevenOS-Neptune 4.x branch has been dubbed "It's all about you" and it was released back in June. In the few months since then, the developers have implemented a number of fixes to the operating system and most of them are pretty important.

"This release fixes some bugs in the installer, bluetooth, plasma & systemd and also provides updated software. KDE Applications & Platform 4.14 was packed in with a new kernel 3.14.13. We added the bfq (budget fair) I/O scheduler to improve desktop responsiveness even on heavy disk I/O usage," the developers say in the announcement.

Right from the start, the Neptune developers have said that they want to have a nice and smooth KDE experience to the users of their operating systems and they managed to pull it off, for the most part.

Most of the developers usually only implement the default KDE installation and they don't really take the time to modify the desktop, although KDE is a very customizable software and you can change it in a number of ways. The end result is a different and unique-looking operating system that's light and easy to use.

According to the developers, the neptune-installer has been fixed and it's now able to remove live tools like snapshot-manager, persistent-creator, and itself, along with the quickinstallation-guides, systemd startup is now creating loopback devices, Bluetooth has been enabled by default in systemd, bluedevil is now able to send files via Bluetooth, plasma workspace is now showing icons and the scrollbar, and the Linux kernel has been updated to version 3.14.13 (the bfq I/O scheduler is enabled by default).

Also, the LibreOffice version from Kanotix has been replaced with the one from the Debian Backports, the default asound.conf with the dsp0 dmix device has been added, Meta/Super/Windows-key + K hotkey will now open Knetworkmounter, the KDE Applications and Plattform has been updated to version 4.14.0, the Nouveau and Intel drivers have been updated, and few other packages and applications have been upgraded as well.

The OS is now using btrfs as the file system and this means that users will get improved support for SSDs, snapshots, raid, and numerous other features that are only available with this technology.

Users will also find that Neptune KDE repo is enabled by default, which means it's going to be very easy to update the system when new versions become available.

A complete list of changes and updates can be found in the official announcement. You can download ZevenOS-Neptune 4.1 "It's all about you" right now from Softpedia.
