Aaron Alexis, the man killing 12 people at the Navy Yard in Washington D.C., has carved a message into his shotgun before going on a rampage.

ABC News reveals that he wrote “Better Off This Way” on the weapon he used on the shooting spree.

The sawed-off shotgun also had "MY E-L-F WEAPON" inscribed on it. The message was engraved on the stock of the shotgun.

In military terms, "E-L-F" could stand for "extremely low frequency," which would be consistent with information about the suspect's mental issues.

Aaron Alexis reported hearing voices and fearing microwave devices attacking him through vibrations.

He died confronting law enforcement, before he could offer an explanation for his actions.

"His actions have had a profound and everlasting effect on the families of the victims. I don't know why he did what he did and I'll never be able to ask him why," his mother, Cathleen Alexis, has stated.
