The gunman killing 12 people at the Washington D.C. Navy yard had reportedly been experiencing mental issues before the murderous spree.

A source has revealed that he had been treated for said issues at the Veterans Administration. Said treatment started in August but the records are protected by doctor-patient confidentiality, Fox News notes.

34-year-old Aaron Alexis entered a building on Navy grounds on Monday, armed with a shotgun and two handguns. He died in a shootout with police officers.

He had been hearing voices and his father has claimed that he suffered from post traumatic stress disorder.

The Navy reservist had been discharged for misconduct in 2011. He had two previous reports about misuse of his weapon.
