One of the most surprising announcements to come out of the recent Nintendo Direct event has been that the upcoming Super Smash Bros. is being developed in collaboration with another high-profile company, Namco Bandai.

A special statement from the publisher detailed which of its personnel are joining the Nintendo game development effort, with the text mentioning Yoshito Higuchi, the series producer and director for the Tales series, Tetsuya Akatsuka, Mobile Suit Gundam: Extreme Vs. director and producer, the main development team working on the Tekken series and the team handling the sound development for the Soul Calibur franchise.

Masaya Kobayashi, who is a producer working at Namco Bandai, stated, “All the top creators from Namco Bandai gathered here to create a never-before-seen dream team for this project. We will fully utilize our experience and knowledge in action fighting game development, technical capability, and organizational strength, and we hereby promise you that we will develop the best and most powerful Super Smash Bros. title ever.”

Masahiro Sakurai, the director of the Super Smash Bros. series, also talked about the new information, saying that he would like to have something solid to show the fan base before talking more about the game.

He added, “The project has just gotten started. Bear in mind that not only are we developing two titles simultaneously, but we announced the project before we even started actual development, so I’m afraid we will likely have to keep you waiting for quite a while. Please be patient.”

Super Smash. Bros is getting its fourth installment on the upcoming Wii U home console and the already launched 3DS handheld.

The development team talked about their intention to change directions for the series and deliver a new type of experience, while also creating more opportunities to connect the two games.
