Over the weekend, a preview of the Today show with Nadya Suleman, the California woman who just gave birth to octuplets, was released. Now, the entire interview is available, in what is meant to be an attempt to introduce to the world the eight wonderful children recently born and, at the same time, make the controversy surrounding the case die down a bit, if possible.

In order to do so, Nadya takes the camera crew inside the hospital where the latest additions to her already large family are now under medical observation. While it’s clear that she is not sorry that she was implanted with so many embryos, which was one of the main arguments that critics have brought against her, she also says she sort of realized the time has come for her to put an end to this. Suleman has other six children at home, which makes for a total of 14, all under the age of eight.

If, over the weekend, 33-year-old Nadya was saying that what she did was not selfish, this time she is more honest about her wanting to have a “huge family.” While not openly admitting that she made a mistake in having so many children despite the fact that she is not able to provide for them financially, she is aware that, all the while, she was just “projecting” her own desires onto her children. In other words, when she said to herself that her children deserved more siblings, she was just saying what she would have wanted for herself while growing up.

As she already admitted, Nadya Suleman grew up desperately wanting brothers and sisters, something that no amount of friends can replace. “That was always a dream of mine, to have a large family, a huge family, and I just longed for certain connections and attachments with another person that I really lacked, I believe, growing up. I didn’t feel as though, when I was a child, I had much control of my environment. I felt powerless. And that gave me a sense of predictability. Reflecting back on my childhood, I know it wasn’t functional. It was pretty dysfunctional, and whose isn’t?” Suleman says.

Her own mother, though, would beg to differ. What Suleman is doing is selfish and unfair to the children she brought into the world. As she told Radar Online, she is none too happy about her daughter giving birth to octuplets, especially since she already has six children at home and she can barely handle them. “I was very upset. She already has six beautiful children, why would she do this? To have them all is unconscionable to me. She really really has no idea what she’s doing to her children and to me.” Suleman’s mother told the aforementioned publication.
