NXP Semiconductors just announced that its EDGE solution has been chosen by Lenovo Mobile Communication Technology Ltd., one of the biggest mobile handset manufacturers in China, to design its first EDGE mobile handset. Lenovo Mobile will mass produce its first EDGE mobile phone in China. Using NXP's Nexperia cellular system solution 5210, this mobile handset is designed around consumers' latest demands to offer optimized and applied functions cost effectively, helping end-users transition from 2.5G to 2.75G. Lenovo Mobile plans to introduce the mobile handset targeting China's 400 million mobile phone subscribers.

"China's mobile handset market is at an important growth stage," said Eric Zhao, Executive Director, Lenovo Group. "NXP's EDGE solution is designed with cutting-edge technologies that have been proven in the market and as an ideal choice for Lenovo Mobile to develop mature and high performance EDGE mobile handsets for consumers with the shortest time-to-market."

NXP's Nexperia cellular system solution 5210 is the second generation product of the EDGE platform, following the huge success of the market-proven Nexperia cellular system solution 6120. Its GSM/GPRS/EDGE platform combines software and hardware designs that can provide optimized multimedia performance without the need for an external co-processor, significantly reducing bills-of-material. This state-of-the-art solution comes pre-tested and validated to enable Lenovo Mobile to accelerate time-to-market and develop EDGE mobile handsets with more advanced features, more cost efficiency and stronger power management.

First shipped and mass produced in Q4 2004, over 250 million Nexperia system solutions have already been shipped worldwide, with more than 30 million EDGE mobile handsets based NXP's solutions in the market.
