Mobile gamers rejoice, as NVIDIA’s variable refresh technology G-Sync will be part of your next-gen laptop in the foreseeable future.
New laptops coming from ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI and Clevo will be the first to take advantage of 75Hz refresh G-sync panels. And all these new models also bundle NVIDIA’s latest series of GPU models, starting from 965M all the way up to 980M.
NVIDIA talked about the new technology during its appearance at Computex 2015 trade show taking place these days in Taiwan.
Why is G-Sync important?
G-Sync is a technology that can synchronize the refresh rate of a monitor with the frame rate of a graphics processing unit. But G-Sync on a desktop monitor works a bit different than it does on laptops.
To embed G-Sync, monitors have to be designed with a particular hardware module about the size of a credit card.
Desktop monitors come with built-in scalers that handle different inputs and communicate with graphics cards. G-Sync will replace these scalers with a module meant to connect to the panel.
But laptops don’t use scalers and attach directly to the graphics cards via LVDS or eDP (built-in DisplayPort). This allows for a direct link between the GPU and the panel to be created.
Technically, a laptop manufacturer could bestow G-Sync support to an existing laptop via a driver and a firmware update. But this will not be how things roll in real life, for the time being.
NVIDIA has set up a whole G-Sync validation process, which entails that laptop makers submit their own panels to NVIDIA for G-Sync testing and selection. Those found not able to hit the 75 Hz refresh cycle will not be given the green light.

NVIDIA says that all new six G-Sync laptops announced come with new 75GHz displays that meet the standards. Most notebooks today can’t go beyond 60GHz.
