The technology will use NVIDIA's Tesla K40 GPU accelerators

Lenovo has mostly made an impression on the PC front, but it wants to leave its mark on other parts of the IT segment, maybe all of them, so it has decided to partner up with some other big names.

So here it is, teaming up with NVIDIA and Magma, plus Hue, to develop a visualization technology for exploration geophysics. The science behind oil and natural gas discovery.

Because, apparently, solar power and electric vehicles haven't advanced enough for the need of oil to stop being pressing.

NVIDIA's Tesla K40 GPU accelerators and Magma GPU expansion technology will be the backbone of the initiative, while Hue will contribute its software development toolkit and visualization technology.

For its part, Lenovo will provide the ThinkStation D30, which will combine everything the others have to offer.

Those interested in contributing to the exploration geophysics initiative will be able to soon order a ThinkStation D30 with up to four NVIDIA Tesla K40 GPU accelerators, held together by Magma’s ExpressBox 3600 GPU expansion system. Hue's HueSpace software toolkit will be installed on the computer. The price is still a secret, alas.

“In exploration, data normally arrives late, and decision schedules often shift forward, squeezing the time available for analysis,” said Dr. Ron Masters, Geoscience advisor at Headwave. “New opportunities always require bigger data volumes, more sophisticated imaging and new interpretation concepts. Our need for speed has never been greater.”
