Santa Clara, California-based NVIDIA is reported to have recorded an impressive first quarter in 2009, as the company managed to maintain its position as the number one GPU vendor on the market. The news comes after earlier reports, according to which Sunnyvale, California-based Advanced Micro Devices grabbed a market share of approximately 40 percent in the third quarter of 2008. However, NVIDIA now claims that its market share has increased to an impressive 68 percent, compared to the company's results in the fourth quarter of 2008.

According to a recent news-article on bit-tech, citing sources from research firms Mercury Research and Jon Peddie Research, NVIDIA succeeded in increasing its market share by 0.3%, in Q1 2009. In the meantime, its competitor's figures were down 1 percent, leaving the chip maker to further establish its dominance on the GPU market. NVIDIA's total share of the entire desktop discrete graphics market is currently at 67%, with a gain of 5.4% compared to the figures from last year's Q4.

In the overall market for discrete graphics solutions, which includes both desktop and portable computer systems, the chip maker's position is also dominant. According to figures, the company is currently the market leader with a 66 percent market share. NVIDIA managed to take back 3 percent of the market share, compared to the results from last quarter. The figures also place its desktop graphics business ahead of its laptop graphics business.

There is, however, a segment where the company is still having problems establishing itself as a leader. This is the market for integrated graphics chips, where Intel still has its way with a massive 49.7 percent of the overall graphics market, according to figures presented by Jon Peddie Research.

NVIDIA has had a number of releases at the beginning of this year, including the company's latest 55nm GT200-series GPUs, which raised the performance level in the desktop graphics market.
