December is the month of Christmas and a lot of people rush to pick up videogames in order to offer to the loved ones on the 25. Despite the fact that actual sales of videogames are said to have seen a decline a 7% during the last month of 2009, reaching 2.58 billion dollars, sales of both gaming hardware and accessories went up.

Still, overall, it is the best December the videogame industry has ever seen, sparking a possible recovery expected to pick up pace during 2010.

And it seems that Reggie Fils-Aime, the president of Nintendo of America, might have been on to something with his prediction that New Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo Wii might have a higher best seller potential than Modern Warfare 2. The title featuring Mario from Nintendo managed to sell 2.82 million units during December in order to take the top position in the videogame chart.

Second spot was also taken by Nintendo with Wii Fit Plus, which moved 2.41 million copies and might break the sales records set by its predecessor, while third spot went to Wii Sport Resort, the Motion Plus-enabled title that sold 1.79 million. The first non Nintendo titles to appear are the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 versions of Modern Warfare 2 from Infinity Ward and Activision, which sold 1.63 million units and 1.12 million units, respectively.

Wii Play managed to take sixth place, just breaking the 1 million units barrier, while seventh spot went to Mario Kart Wii, which moved 936,000. Assassin's Creed II from Ubisoft for the Xbox 360 is at number eight, with 783,100 copies sold, while Left 4 Dead 2 From Valve is at number nine, with Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story from Alphadream for the Nintendo DS ending the top ten of videogames sold in the United States in December.
