Go out West

A lot of North American gamers have played Red Dead Redemption, the open world action title created by Rockstar and published by Take Two, but that was not enough to make the month of May a very good one for the video game industry. Overall value of sales is down about 5% when compared to the same period of last year with sales of actual games registering an increase of about 4 percent, while sales of accessories are up 3%.

Take Two has pretty much succeeded in creating a new successful franchise, with Red Dead Redemption managing to sell 945,900 units on the Xbox 360 in one month and 567,100 copies on the PlayStation 3.

It's interesting to note that both versions of the Western-themed shooter have performed better than Super Mario Galaxy 2 from Nintendo, a Wii home console exclusive, which sold 563,900 copies in North America in its first month, a bit of a disappointment given the star power of the main characters.

Fourth place in the chart goes to UFC 2010: Undisputed from Yuke and THQ for the Xbox 360, which got 221,100 copies in the hands of gamers, the PlayStation 3 version of the same game arriving in fifth with 192,300. By comparison, UFC 2009: Undisputed managed to sell about twice the copies of its successor, topping the videogame chart. It seems that the updated fight system introduced in the sequel has failed to convince those who picked up the first iteration in the series.

Wii Fit Plus from Nintendo took sixth place, followed by New Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo Wii, Alan Wake from Microsoft for the Xbox 360, which debuted in eighth place, Pokemon Soul Silver for the Nintendo DS and Skate 3 from Electronic Arts for the Xbox 360. The NPD Group is no longer offering sales numbers for the other five places of the top ten.
