The NPD Group has revealed its software chart for the month of September in the United States, showing that the EA Sports made Madden NFL 12 American football simulation has managed to top the chart, beating big favorite Gears of War 3, from Epic Games and Microsoft.

Overall video game sales managed to grow when compared to the same period of last year of 3 percent, reaching 630.2 million dollars (close to 459 million Euro), while hardware saw a decrease of 6% for the same period.

The NPD Group no longer releases actual sales numbers for the video game in its chart but Madden NFL 12 probably sold more than 2 million copies in order to get the top position and perform better than the previous title in the series, which only managed to get second behind Halo: Reach during September 2010.

Gears of War 3, which is a Xbox 360 exclusive title, has managed to take second spot in the chart and push sales of the Microsoft home console to the top of the hardware chart.

Third place went, somewhat unexpectedly, to Dead Rising, the zombie based action title from developer Techland and publisher Deep Silver.

FIFA Soccer 12 from EA Sports, which launched on home consoles, the PC and the PSP and the Nintendo 3DS, has managed to take fourth position despite the fact that it launched near the end of the month, while NHL 12 managed to take fifth for Electronic Arts.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution, the third person action and role playing game from Square Enix and Eidos Montreal, has taken sixth despite being launched in August, beating the PlayStation 3 exclusive Resistance 3.

LEGO Star Wars: The Clone Wars from LucasArts has taken eight place, followed by Call of Duty: Black Ops from Activision and Treyarch, with Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine from THQ and Relic closing down the top ten.
