The next-gen launch has boosted overall revenue for the industry

The NPD Group says that the PlayStation 4 from Sony has outsold the Xbox One from Microsoft significantly during the month of November on the United States market and both devices gave a significant boost to the overall revenue of the industry.

The sales tracking firm says that the PS4 has managed to top the hardware chart by launching almost a week earlier than its rival.

Sony says that November sales are a sign that its new device is well positioned to also perform well during December, with its crucial Christmas shopping season.

VG247 quotes a representative from Microsoft as saying that the 909,132 devices it has delivered to gamers make the device the fastest selling of the month and show it to be more attractive than its main rivals.

The Xbox 360 managed to sell another 674,000 consoles last month in order to remain the best-seller of current-gen platforms.

Microsoft also reveals that the Xbox One has three times the sales of the previous device and that on average, players bought 2.1 games along with their console.

The launch of the two new devices managed to boost hardware sales significantly, with an increase of 57 percent when compared to the same period of last year, creating a period which the NPD Group estimated to represent the best ever for the category.

The game industry has generated sales of 2.74 billion dollars (1.87 billion dollars) in the United States in November.

The only problem with the tracked period is that video game sales failed to register a similar increase, despite the appearance of the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 and even if players were able to take advantage of Thanksgiving to increase their collections.

The next generation of hardware is unsustainable if Microsoft and Sony cannot persuade gamers to pick up more titles, either via digital distribution or via traditional retail.
