Tablets could become a very useful tool in risky professional environments

Japanese device manufacturer NEC is not playing when it comes to building tablets. Its latest model, showcased at a recent trade show, boasts some incredible capabilities most of the tablets out there don’t even dream about.

That’s exactly why NEC is not aiming to promote the new slate to the general public but to industrial environments, military organizations and law enforcement, says the New York Times. According to them, the new ruggedized Shieldpro H11A can survive being completely submersed into water and withstand a fall from a 5-foot / 1.5-meter height onto a concrete floor.

NEC claims that they have already managed to get the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department to jump onboard with the ruggedized devices. It might make sense if you think that police officers are mostly on the go and checking for a suspect’s criminal history while outside is pouring might be part of their job description.

To make the tablet invincible, NEC has coated it in a magnesium alloy frame and added reinforced corners. So there should be no surprise when we tell you that the device weighs over 4 pounds / 1.8 kg. Still acceptable to be carried around.

Even if the H11A was not created with the average tablet user in mind, NEC doesn't exclude pushing the device to the consumer market, at some point.
