Like many other major technology manufacturers around the world, the NEC company is involved in a very large number of market segments, including several which are less advertised, as for example that of medical devices. And the company's latest announcement is related exactly to this particular field, as NEC has just announced the release of a new MultiSync 5-megapixel grayscale display, the MD21GS-5MP model, as a part of the MultiSync MD Series, a family of medical-grade LCDs designed exclusively for the demanding needs of the diagnostic professionals.

With a 2560 x 2048 native resolution, NEC's 5-MP display includes in-plane switching (IPS) LCD module technology, offering powerful details of medical images and a possible 3,061 shades of gray. It also includes a backlight sensor and DICOM calibration, as well as a 30-ms response time and a contrast ratio of 600:1. The display's pivoting stand allows for use in landscape or portrait orientation.

In addition, the MD monitor system is supplied with the GammaCompMD software, which supports different sensors for calibration. These include both external colorimeters for direct measurement at the surface and spot luminance meters for distance measurement. Furthermore, the display also is RoHS (Restriction on Hazardous Substances) compliant, containing fully disposable plastics and minimal amounts of hazardous materials such as lead, hex-chrome, cadmium, mercury, PBDE and PBB.

"This medically certified 5-Megapixel display embodies the precision, high performance and intelligence one would expect from NEC, a leader in display technology", said Stan Swiderski, Product Manager of Professional and Medical Displays for NEC Display Solutions.

As one might expect, this highly advanced display is quite expensive. Thus, it is estimated that the MD21GS-5MP will retail for around 10,000 US dollars (yeah, that's right, PER UNIT!!!), after it will be cleared by the FDA in January.
