It happens to be a widescreen model with a very mobile stand

NEC's MultiSync collection of monitors seems to grow a bit every month, either by one or more models. What we have here is this month's latest addition to the line: MultiSync E223W.

If anything, NEC is aiming for people who work in cubicles or in other positions that do not need too much work space.

Then again, while all the announcements about 50-inch or larger TVs may have distorted people's view of what a large panel is, 22-inch diagonals are still quite big for monitors, especially business/office ones.

The new MultiSync E223W even has the 16:10 aspect ratio, which gives just a tiny bit more vertical workroom than normal models (16:9).

The native resolution may disappoint some though: 1680 x 1050 pixels. Quite a step behind Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels).

Then again, Full HD video viewing won't happen much on office PCs, so the lack of 1080p quality shouldn't be too hard to swallow.

Besides, the focus of the NEC MultiSync E223W is on something other than performance, namely energy efficiency.

"NEC Display's strong commitment to the environment has been an industry hallmark for a number of years," said Kevin Christopherson, director of product marketing for desktop displays at NEC Display Solutions.

"The MultiSync E223W uses an LED-backlit LCD to increase energy savings by up to 40 percent in comparison to conventional CCFL-backlit LCD monitors. This is especially beneficial to our business customers that are looking for ways to reduce their impact on the environment, as well as save costs."

In addition to the W-LED backlight, the monitor has a DCR (dynamic contrast ratio) of 25,000:1, brightness of 250 cd/m2, an Intelligent Power Management (IPM) system and off timer, touch-sensitive OSD controls, 5-preset Dynamic Video Mode (standard, text, movie, game, photo) and all four environmental certifications (EPEAT Silver compliance, ENERGY STAR 6.0 compliance, TCO 5.0 compliance, and RoHS compliance).

Sales will begin this month (May 2013) for $209 / €159-209.
