A possible replacement for UPS ?

Maybe soon we will have another solution, beside USP, to protect our valuable information in case of a power failure.

NEC said on Friday it wasin the process of developing a high-power organic radical battery, known also as ORB. The battery is designed to power standard desktop PCs in the event of a power failure.

The company said that the size of the new high-power organic radical battery (ORB) is similar to the battery of a typical cell phone (55 x 43 x 4 mm; 88 grams) and that is able to deliver a maximum power of 35 watts.

Combining several cells in a series can produce the power needed to power a PC, which requires about 140 watts under peak load, or between 75 to 85 watts under normal operating conditions. Four of the small, thin ORB cells are all that's required to keep a desktop PC running for the 10 or 20 seconds.

The battery is connected to the power source of the computer and will automatically turn on and start a shutdown process when it detects a loss of power or voltage drop. According to NEC, Organic Radical Battery, or ORB, has the same cell structure as lithium ion battery. The main difference is that instead of using poisonous ingredients like lithium and cobalt, it uses an organic compound called PTMA.

Because ORB has a similar structure with a lithium-in battery the manufacturing process is very similar, so mass production, when or if it occurs, could likely be done on existing battery production lines with only minor adjustments.

NEC is working on this project since 2000 and the company is evaluating the possible uses for the technology as it moves toward possible commercialization.
