Electronic Arts has confirmed that it will be launching a brand new NBA Jam this fall, a successor to the one released in 2010, while the full pledged simulation title currently in development at EA Tiburon won't be arriving this year.

EA, in case you haven't followed its whole basketball situation, was set to release a brand new iteration in its series, in the form of NBA Elite 11 onto the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, while a retro remake of NBA Jam would appear for the Wii.

The game was officially canceled, however, as EA scrambled to release NBA Jam as a downloadable title for the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live.

Now, the company has confirmed that it will be releasing a follow-up to the retro title, called NBA Jam: On Fire Edition, which is set to include a variety of new features.

These include an upgraded AI system, taken from the Fight Night boxing series, that "learns your tendencies and throws them back in your face," a new online mode called Jam Arena, as well as a cooperative online campaign called Road Trip that allows you to "team up with friends and compete in a series of white-knuckle challenges against the current superstars and timeless legends from each of the 30 NBA Teams."

Other things, including the return of Team Fire and Tag modes, online roster updates and plenty of unlockable items, are also a part of NBA Jam: On Fire Edition which will appear on the PlayStation Store and Xbox Live Marketplace this October.

EA Sports President Peter Moore admitted that the new simulation title, currently in development at the EA Tiburon studio, wouldn't be making its appearance this year.

"As planned, our next NBA simulation title is in development at our Tiburon Studio in Orlando," said Moore. "We have top talent on the game, and we're giving the new development team time to deliver a superior experience. We're making great strides and looking forward to launching a new game next year."
