The feature seems to be backfiring for a lot of users

NBA 2K15 came out in the United States yesterday, and with it a ton of hilarity regarding the face-scanning technique it utilizes to create a custom character for MyCareer mode.

The popular basketball video game series has one feature that gets gamers confused: is the face-scanning system broken or is it a Halloween special?

The next-gen technology that the sports game makes ample use of includes a more in-depth than ever MyCareer mode, delivering a more realistic experience enhanced by the possibility of scanning your head and having your own face plastered on your custom in-game player.

Early results from using the feature, however, have been hilarious at best, as can be seen in the gallery below. NBA 2K series Digital Marketing Director Ronnie Singh has been quick to offer some helpful advice to those who are experiencing trouble with the face-scanning feature, explaining how to go about the process in order to maximize your chances of getting it right.

However, that didn't stop the social media backlash. Users are wondering whether 2K Games wanted to add orcs to the game or whether it's a commentary on their appearance.

The face-scanning technique is quite exciting, on paper at least

The feature is a new addition to the series, only available this year on the PlayStation 4, by using the PlayStation Camera, or on the Kinect on the Xbox One. You have to be pretty patient and move around slowly, and even then, the process might just stop mid-attempt and simply restart.

If you want to get a decent scan of your face, some gamers report that you need a pretty strong light source, as facial scans don't mix well with low-light rooms. If you want to get a decent one, you'll most likely need to jump through a few hoops.

In any case, if you're looking for a new Halloween mask to try on, or some spooky, grotesque decorations to hang around your home to scare trick-or-treaters away, using NBA 2K15's face-scanning technique seems to be a pretty solid idea.

SBNation compiled the best of the face-scanning fails, so if you feel that you got the short end of the stick with yours, you really should check out some of the monstrosities that other people created. Some of them look like they jumped right out of a Hieronymus Bosch painting.

NBA 2K15 is coming out on October 10 worldwide, headed to the PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 platforms.
