NASA recently parted ways with a ship it used for 30 years to recover the Solid Rocket Boosters (SRB) the space shuttles separated from as they launched. The MV Liberty Star has now been handed over to the US Transportation Department.

According to the agreement signed between the two agency, the rocket-retrieving ship will be used for training at the Merchant Marine Academy, in Kings Point, New York. The collaboration contract was signed between NASA ant the TD Maritime Administration (MARAD).

The memorandum of understanding was signed by both parties on August 21. MV Liberty Star is now officially enlisted in the US National Defense Reserve Fleet, Space reports.

“Liberty Star served NASA well during the space shuttle program. We know it will greatly benefit the Kings Point midshipmen, and we're proud that Liberty Star will continue to serve the United States with distinction,” commented NASA acting associate administrator, Robert Lightfoot.
