Social network going for wider audience

Facebook must have spooked shivers down MySpace's spine. From the outside, it looks like the biggest (still) social network in the world is trying to expand into all directions at once. It just opened offices in Russia and a homepage for the community there, a similar course of action is coming in Turkey (MySpace Turkey - always cracks me up) and now MySpaceTV has signed a deal to have BBC Worldwide provide video content.

The agreement they have come to doesn't have a lot of fine print attached to it, or at least that's the way things look. The video content will be embeddable by the users of the social network on their own pages and available for sharing with friends. And anyone can subscribe to the BBC channel, no matter of their location. Most of the shows on BBC will be up for the sharing, well, at least as snippets, from Top Gear to The Mighty Boosh.

A first step in this direction has just been made and, as I mentioned above, MySpace is trying everything to see its position as a stable and unchallenged top dog. The managing director of the social network didn't shy away from mentioning that this might only be the first of several deals with media companies: "This is the first global network deal for MySpaceTV and we believe it's the future of collaboration between the web and networks around the globe. The BBC is one of the World's most recognized and trusted television brands with fantastic content," Travis Katz told WebUser.com.

Meanwhile, Facebook is probably stepping it down a notch as some of its most popular applications are under the watchful eye of some of the companies who might have been prejudiced when the apps were created, by infringing copyrights. However, at the rate it is growing, it shouldn't have any problems attracting flocks of new users even if they don't do anything new for a while.
