The social network grows up in popularity

MySpace, the 6th website in the Alexa rank, tends to become more popular than traditional TV, a recent survey made by Future Laboratory and commissioned by the social networking website revealed. According to the Financial Times, an important part of the 1,000 people included in the survey admitted that they "would rather spend 15 minutes visiting social networking sites than watching television, reading, playing video games or talking on mobile phones." Also, 12 percent of the respondents find the social network as a way to earn money, as MySpace is more and more regarded as an important way to advertise products and promote all kinds of services.

MySpace claims it is the largest social network on the web, with millions of registered members all over the world. However, Facebook, the most important rival in the social networking dispute, puts the pressure on the competition as it grows up a lot and brings millions of users on its website. For example, Facebook's officials said, at the time of signing the deal with Microsoft, that their social network brought about 200,000 new users every day.

Some people say that Facebook is even more popular than MySpace, even if this second social network has "an estimated 110m active users", as the Financial Times informed.

But, having such an impressive popularity doesn't necessarily mean that it is also secure and safe to be used by any Internet consumer. It's well known the fact that MySpace and Facebook host all kinds of people, including sex offenders and pedophiles who represent a real danger for young and naive members. For example, a few months ago, the authorities identified several thousands of sex offenders, who used the social networking services to request adult content to young users and, even worse, to meet them for sexual purposes.
