14 DAY TRIAL // Yahoo revealed today a brand new beta version of My Yahoo, a product designed by the giant portal meant to add some configuration options for the Yahoo users. Let me explain better the concept of My Yahoo. As you surely know, Yahoo is the most visited portal on the Internet because it provides instant access to news, photos, search technologies or mail services. Because it is visited by millions of users every day, some of them might be disappointed by a certain element from the Yahoo portal and may decide to look for an alternative. The company decided to create My Yahoo, a customizable version of the Yahoo portal that allows users to choose their own services, design and functions of the website.
Today, the employees revealed My Yahoo Beta, an innovative edition of the product that offers numerous interesting elements for all the Yahoo fans. I must say I was really disappointed when I decided to try the service and Yahoo sustained my browser is not supported. Although I'm currently using Firefox 2 with a Kubuntu distribution, Yahoo said the only supported browsers are Internet Explorer and Firefox for Windows or Mac.
First of all, I was really amazed by the interface of the new beta. You can use the "Personalize this page" option to configure the appearance of the page, the service allowing you to choose from up to 9 color themes available. You're also able to modify the layout of the page, being able to select between 2, 3 or 4 columns page with a small or a large search box.
Then, you must customize the content of the page and the location on the My Yahoo portal. You can choose from numerous services, including all the products developed by Yahoo allowing you to check your mail, view the forecast or read the latest news with ease. One interesting element is represented by the YouTube feed that allows you to watch the most viewed clips of the day directly from the page. You can also view the bookmarks, the horoscope, or the job openings as well as numerous other details about certain domains.
As far I can see, the product is very similar to NetVibes, a product that allows you to customize the page with your own page, enabling you to add feeds, search engines and other type of content using a simple web interface. Although the loading time of My Yahoo is quite slow, I really see the product as a powerful alternative to the classic homepage of all the Internet users. Now, you should go out there and give it a try!
