Mushkin has been dealing in solid state drives for quite a while, having a special liking for the SandForce controller, just like its rivals, and it seems that one of its series of such SSDs, namely Callisto deluxe, has just increased by one member, with a capacity of 40GB.

There are multiple SSD controllers available for makers of solid state drives to choose from, but the ones from SandForce stood out from the fold quite early on.

Simply put, the SF controller, particularly the SF-1200 that made it into many models, including the $100 OWC SSD, reach very high transfer speeds.

What's more, the difference between the rate of reading and writing is quite small, of as little as 10 MB/s.

As one may have already guessed, it is this very SandForce SF-1200 controller that Mushkin used in its newest Calliso deluxe storage unit.

With 40GB of internal space, this newcomer is constructed out of MLC (multi-level cell) NAND Flash memory chips and operates on the SATA 3.0 Gbps interface.

The exact transfer speeds are of 285 MB/s when reading and 275 MB/s when writing, while random write performance is of up to 50,000 IOPS (Input/Output Operations per Second).

As for reliability and endurance, the newcomer supports the Windows 7 TRIM command and has a MTBF of 2 million hours.

“Our new 40GB Callisto deluxe drives are a product that customers in all segments can enjoy,”said Brian Flood, Mushkin’s director of product development.

They are not only a great solution to enter the exciting world of solid state disk technology, but also a great data storage solution for enthusiasts when placed in a RAID configuration,” he added.

The Callsito deluxe 40GB SSD is available in Europe with a three-year warranty, a price of 108 Euro and bundled with a 2.5-inch to 3.5-inch adapter.
