The Qosmio F60 was just announced by Toshiba Computer Systems, a division of Toshiba Europe GmbH. This product is eye-catching thanks to its striking, high-gloss, red cover and silver-colored Qosmio lettering, as well as an elegant, black interior, stylish, black speaker grill and a silver line design on the palm rest. The official press release touts the laptop as "an entertainment powerhouse."

"Slim design is no longer an attribute reserved for ultraportable laptops – it is now even featured in multimedia class devices," Thomas Teckentrup, general manager, Toshiba Computer Systems Division Europe, says. "The Qosmio F60 packs a broad range of premium multimedia features into a slim form factor, offering a really sleek design." The Qosmio F60 measures only 29.1mm in thickness and weighs only 2.7 kg.

The premium multimedia features include a 15.6-inch (39.6 cm) TruBrite HD display with LED backlighting, a "high performing graphics processing unit" and a Blu-ray rewritable drive that also supports DVD media. Additionally, the mobile multimedia computer uses the Toshiba upconversion software Resolution+, an HD web camera, high-quality Harman Kardon stereo speakers and even an integrated analogue and digital (DVB-T) Hybrid TV Tuner, which "supports the most popular TV broadcasting formats." The machine can also pick up radio signals and may use a DVD-SuperMulti (DL) instead of Blu-ray.

Resolution+ is a super-resolution algorithm developed by Toshiba, which converts standard-definition videos from DVD, DVD-SuperMulti or Blu-ray drives into near-HD quality. Unlike conventional upconversion processes, however, Resolution+ also downscales the upconverted image for comparison with the original, improving image quality before upscaling it again to near HD.

More accurate specifications include a choice of Intel CoreTM i3, CoreTM i5 and CoreTM i7 processors, NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M graphics with 1GB VRAM, up to 8GB DDR3 (1066 MHz) and the aforementioned 15.6-inch TruBrite 16:9 display with LED backlighting and an HD resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels. The laptop has up to 640GB HDD (with 3D impact sensor), WLAN (802.11 b/g/n) and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR for wireless connectivity and runs Windows 7.

Toshiba also took care to make the laptop as eco-friendly as possible. The device complies with European WEEE and RoHS directives, thus restricting the use of hazardous substances such as lead, mercury, and others. Also, the Qosmio F60 is ENERGY STAR 5.0 qualified and uses the Toshiba Eco utility to reduce the power consumption.

The Toshiba Qosmio F60 will become available during the first quarter of 2010 in Europe, Middle East and Africa at a starting price of US$1,287. More information may be found here.
