Firefox is no longer a pleasure to use because of one stupid decision to lower the action area for new tab creation

I’m not the type of user who’s fanatical about the browser they employ for everyday tasks. I use them all, to be perfectly frank. And I don’t discriminate, because each of them has that one special feature that means the world to me.

I also can’t be bothered to use too many extensions because, to me, keeping track of these things is a nightmare. Especially when Mozilla goes and updates something and breaks something else. Which is what I’m planning to rant about in the following paragraphs.

Mozilla, ask before you do something to my browser

I’m probably one of a handful of users affected by this nuisance, but it’s become such a nightmare to me that I need to write a long rant to flush it out of my system. Ready?

I passionately hate the irreversible double-click affair that spawns a new tab in the newer versions of Firefox, because it no longer lets me use the same easy command to minimize the browser’s window. Let me make one thing clear. The feature is still there, but the only problem is I only get a couple of pixels’ worth of space to do that now. So, once every three times, instead of minimizing the browser, I double-click too low and open a new tab.

No workarounds for me, thanks, just give me back my space

I’m sure there’s an extension out there that can fix this, but I don’t have the time or the patience to look for it. I usually go with every default configuration I can get my hands on, and Firefox used to be perfect for me before this update.

If you’re planning to lecture me in the comments about the importance of adopting new experiences, you can go ahead and do that. I won’t mind, really. However, before you begin, please note the reasons why I’m making such a big deal about this.

I want to stay productive and not be annoyed at the things that could have easily never existed, had Mozilla bothered to ask themselves some simple usability questions. The least they could do is slap an on/off toggle on it, honestly.

What I will be curious to see in the comments is how many users minimize their browser’s window aiming for the small yellow traffic light and how many prefer double-clicking the top of the UI. Personally, I find the double-click minimize function one of the best usability options in OS X. I’m big on these things.
