Mozilla is pushing forward not only with Firefox 3.6 and Firefox 3.7, but also with the mobile flavor of its open-source browser. In this regard, Aakash Desai, QA engineer at Mozilla, issued a public call for testers of the Beta development milestone of Fennec 1.0. All testers will be welcomed to participate in the test drive initiative of Fennec 1.0 Beta, Mozilla informed.

“We're going to be holding a MAJOR Testday event on Friday, August 21st, from 7AM - 5PM PDT, for the latest beta version of Fennec1.0! We're going to be running smoketests, testing website compatibility, UI changes, triaging mobile UNCONFIRMED/RESOLVED bugs, adding testcases to litmus and other things on various mobile/desktop platforms,” Desai revealed.

The Testday will cover scenarios involving Fennec 1.0 Beta for mobile phones, as well as the versions of the browser that can run on desktop operating systems. In this context, testers can either be running Fennec for Nokia Maemo (Fennec and Xulrunner), or Windows Mobile, but also for Linux, Windows and Mac OSX.

“We are indeed looking for testers on Non-Mobile Operating Systems (Windows XP, Mac OSX, and Linux Distros) as well as mobile OS'. Users on the formerly mentioned operating systems can run fennec by simply going to the mobile nightly builds page, un-zipping/un-tarring the .zip/.tar.gz files and double-clicking "Fennec",” Desai added.

At the end of June 2009, Mozilla made available two new fresh releases of Fennec, namely Fennec 1.0 Beta 2 for Maemo and Fennec 1.0 Alpha 2 for Windows Mobile. “For these releases we have worked on improving the user experience, replacing our old theme with a much nicer looking one and fixing numerous usability issues. We’ve continued to increase performance and responsiveness. We’ve revamped how you install Add-ons, improved our download manager and the whole look of the application. We’ve started work on making forms on web pages easier to use, providing a nicer combo box UI than before,” explained Stuart Parmenter, Mozilla software engineer.
