HTML5 and the batch of new web technologies promise to transform the online space, making the web a true platform for applications. And what better way to showcase this than with games for the web than run in every browser without any plugins, which is exactly what Mozilla is trying to prove with the Game On competition, which is now one week from completion.

"Friendly reminder: the finish line for the Game On competition is just one week away on the 11th of January, 2011! If you want to build a game for the whole wide Web to use, this is your chance to make that game," Mozilla announced.

"We’re beyond excited to see what the possibilities will be, so we’re building a gallery to show your games to the world! This gallery will be opening soon after the contest ends," it added.

The Game On 2010 competition has been underway for a few months now and it's time to see what developers have been able to create using nothing more than standard web technologies.

Once the submissions phase is closed, a panel of judges will rate the entries and name the winners in several categories. To make things interesting, Mozilla is rewarding the best developers with several prizes.

For the best overall game, prizes include a trip to the Game Developers Conference 2011, a copy of Adobe's Dreamweaver CS5, a Nvidia GeForce GTX 460 graphics card and others. But probably the best prize is being included in the Firefox 4 Gallery, getting your game in front of hundreds of millions of people.

There will be winners in the best technology, best web-iness, best aesthetics, most original, best polish, most fun, and community choice categories which will also be rewarded with similar prizes and the chance to have your game promoted along with Firefox 4.
