In 2009, 20th Century Fox released “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” arguably one of the weakest and worst received installments ever in the “X-Men” franchise. It was supposed to be the launching pad for a Deadpool spinoff, with Ryan Reynolds playing the titular character, after he was introduced in this film.

Two years after the release of this “Wolverine,” people were still talking about the spinoff and fans were still hoping they might get to see it in theaters. Today, it’s clear that it will never happen or, at least, not in the format Fox was going for at the time, with Reynolds as lead.

Footage from the film has emerged online. ComicBookMovie.com says that it’s most likely test footage, noting that it’s entirely CGI. However, Reynolds did the motion capture and the voice for the character, as you can tell. The video is available below.

The film was supposed to be R-rated (which, again, you can tell from the gruesome deaths Deadpool inflicts upon the bad guys) and directed by Tim Miller. The test footage was overseen by Miller at his visual effects company Blur Studio.

The aforementioned publication says that it was most likely put together some time in 2011, when interest in Deadpool was still significant.

Today, it’s clear that we will never see Reynolds play Deadpool in his standalone movie. Whether a Deadpool spinoff will happen is still a mystery even though, in the past couple of years, Fox has managed to breathe new life into “X-Men” and “Wolverine.” So what this leaked video does is show us a glimpse of what could have been.

Tell me, do you like what you see?
