On Thursday, Motorola's Networks business announced plans to offer support for “802.16e Enhanced” features in its WiMAX product roadmap. As per the company, it is working with ArrayComm for the implementation of this advanced baseband technology. The strategy is also meant to offer support for the initiative launched by WiMAX industry players to increase the performance and capacity of the solution, while accelerating the inclusion of advanced features.

One step that Motorola will take towards the support of accelerating its 802.16e Enhanced product offering is the integration of advanced Multi-Antenna Signal processing technology (A-MASTM) from ArrayComm LLC into a series of wireless broadband radio products. Bruce Duysen, President of ArrayComm, considers Motorola a leader in 4G systems rolled out all around the world. According to him, the combination of its radio platforms with ArrayComm’s A-MAS should result in the delivery of high-end system economics for wireless carriers.

“As many WiMAX operators shift their network focus from initial deployments and coverage to optimization and capacity, there is an increased need for spectral efficiency and that’s what 802.16e Enhanced and our integration of ArrayComm technology offers,” said Fred Gabbard, vice president of Product Management, Motorola Networks. “WiMAX and OFDM technology are well-suited to address a diverse set of application demands. Advanced performance enhancements – such as beamforming and interference cancellation – allow operators to increase the number of users, data volume and peak rate supported by a given amount of radio spectrum. With these improvements, an operator can add more users and provide a better experience, making a compelling business case even more attractive.”

Motorola's WiMAX roadmap should get enhanced with 802.16e Enhanced feature capabilities, including the possibility to increase coverage while reducing interference, or to improve single-user throughput. The new features are expected to prove a great option when it comes to doubling peak data rates or to increase the performance of cell edge by up to 70 percent. Motorola’s latest WiMAX solution should enjoy an easy deployment of 802.16e Enhanced via a software upgrade.
