Motorola, Inc. announced on Monday that its Home & Networks Mobility business had been selected by Craig Wireless Systems Limited for the deployment of a new 802.16e WiMAX network in Vancouver, British Columbia. According to Motorola, the network for Vancouver will represent the first deployment of the company's mobile WiMAX technology in Canada.

The agreement that Motorola signed states that it should deliver end-to-end WiMAX solutions, such as base stations, wireless access controllers and an operation and maintenance center (OMC). In addition, the company will also deliver support services for the design of the network, as well as for planning, installation and optimization of the network, set to work on the 2.5GHz spectrum band.

“The Motorola solution will enable us to hit the ground running in our Vancouver market and seize immediate opportunities to serve our customers with new mobile services and applications,” said Rod Vandenbos, president of Craig Wireless Systems Ltd. “Our customers in Vancouver will be able to enjoy fast, reliable connections to the Internet anywhere they live, work or play.”

The WiMAX solution that Motorola will deliver has been specifically designed so as to provide fast voice over IP (VoIP) implementation, as well as high-speed Internet, video streaming and virtual private network (VPN) access in both fixed and mobile environments. Users that will choose WiMAX will benefit from high speeds when it comes to the services, as well as from continuous connectivity and flexibility. At the same time, Motorola also says that Craig Wireless will benefit from its advanced end-user devices that provide support for the service.

“This first commercial deployment of Motorola's WiMAX technology in Canada underscores our commitment to WiMAX,” said Fred Gabbard, vice president, Wireless Networks, Motorola Home & Networks Mobility. “We look forward to helping Craig Wireless launch a new technology for new services in a new market, and in future markets as they expand internationally.”
