Yesterday, Motorola and Verizon Wireless announced the immediate pre-order availability of a new device in the popular DROID family of Android smartphones, namely the DROID RAZR M.

The handset can be seen today on Verizon’s website, and it should reach the company’s stores starting with September 13.

Starting with that day, users will be able to purchase the device both online and via Verizon’s retail locations for $99.99 with the signing of a two-year contract agreement and after a $50 mail-in rebate.

Featuring a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Advanced display, the new handset runs under Google’s Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich platform, but it is set to taste an upgrade to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean by the end of 2012.

The new device comes with a 1.5 GHz dual-core application processor packed inside, 1GB of RAM, and support for the wireless carrier’s 4G LTE network.

“Customers will be amazed with the DROID RAZR M’s design, which is significantly shorter and narrower than the original DROID RAZR, yet includes the same size display, making it the most compact 4.3-inch 4G LTE smartphone,” Motorola notes on its website.

The new smartphone comes with an 8-megapixel camera with LED flash and 1080p HD recording, complemented by a front camera for making video calls.

Additionally, it sports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and built-in GPS receiver, and features Mobile Hotspot capabilities, being able to provide wireless connectivity to up to 8 Wi-Fi-enabled devices.

The software capabilities of the new device are also appealing, such as its Chrome for Android browser or Google’s own software, including Google Maps, Google+, YouTube, or the plethora of apps that users can download from the Google Play Store.

“Do more with Droid RAZR M in less taps by setting up SMARTACTIONS. Set Droid RAZR M to anticipate your needs according to your GPS location, time of day, or amount of battery life,” Verizon notes.

“Wake up to news feeds that launch with the alarm. Automatically shut down non-essential functions when your battery runs low. Let Droid RAZR M handle operations that are routine when your life is anything but.”

Those of you interested in grabbing a DROID RAZR M when it becomes available should head over to this page on Verizon’s website to reserve one or sign up for info on its arrival. The phone will be launched in both Black and White flavors.
