Motorola India has just announced that Motorola XOOM will get the Android 3.1 Honeycomb update starting tomorrow, July 29.

It appears that the 40MB update will be pushed OTA (over the air) tomorrow morning, but Motorola XOOM users can manually check for the firmware upgrade if they do not receive the notification.

To check for the update, simply go to Settings / About Tablet / System Updates and the update will pop up in case Motorola starts to deploy it on schedule.

Some of the most important new features and improvements added by Android 3.1 update are detailed below:

- Improved multi-tasking to run several application in the background; - Resizable home screen widgets for Gmail, Calendar and Browser; - Keyboard and mouse input support over Bluetooth; - Support for most PC joysticks and gamepads via USB or Bluetooth; - Easy USB image transfer directly to the gallery; - High-performance Wi-Fi lock lets applications maintain high-performance Wi-Fi connections even when the device screen is off; - Comes with pre-loaded Flash Player and File Manager. In addition, the update enable the tablet's SD card slot, so users can expand XOOM's external memory up to 64GB using a microSD memory card.

According to Motorola, other countries in Asia Pacific are scheduled to receive this update, including Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand.

The 3.1 update for Motorola Xoom outside the U.S. has started. Owners in Europe can expect updates over the next several weeks until the roll out is complete. The 3.1 update for non-U.S. devices, in addition to many other improvements, also includes SD card activation. Release notes will be made available in each region, functionality varies by region,” a Motorola spokesperson stated.

On related news, Motorola also announced that European Motorola XOOM owners will receive Android 3.1 update by August 9, but has yet to announce the exact roadmap of the update.
