Motorola Mobility introduced the original Motorola XOOM in Italy last year in April. It took the company nine months to launch XOOM’s successor in the country.

Motorola XOOM 2 is available in Italy starting this week. The slate can be purchased for 600 EUR (770 USD) via TIM carrier stores. The tablet seems a bit overpriced but Motorola might drop its price in the following weeks.

In fact, there’s a high chance that the XOOM 2 will be the subject of a price cut as soon as Mobile World Congress 2012 kicks off next month. Motorola plans to make several important announcements at the trade fair, which might also include new Android devices.

Although Motorola XOOM 2 is a new device, it’s still not competitive enough with other slates in its price range, such as Acer, iPad and Asus.

“Tablets are quickly becoming a must-have tool for staying connected, getting work done and having fun at home and on the road,” said Paolo Prearo, Mobile Devices Business general manager, Motorola Mobility Italia.

One of the latest tablets announced by Motorola, the XOOM 2 is powered by Android 3.2 Honeycomb, but the slate is expected to receive an Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade sometime this year.

Furthermore, Motorola XOOM 2 embeds a powerful dual-core 1.2 GHz processor that goes along with a ULP GeForce graphics processing unit. The tablet also packs 16GB of internal memory and 1GB of RAM.

The 10.1-inch capacitive touchscreen display (800 x 1280 pixels resolution) is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass. On the back, there’s a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus and LED flash, while in the front there’s a secondary 1.3-megapixel camera.

We are very excited about this new new addition to our tablet portfolio that builds on the success of the original Motorola XOOM to now deliver more powerful tablet experiences to the European market,” concluded Prearo.
