Motorola has just announced the availability of the Android 2.3 Gingerbread upgrade for the DROID 2 Global smartphone.

It's been almost a week since Motorola deployed the same upgrade for the standard DROID 2 from Verizon, and it looks like owners of the Global version will soon be able to experience the improvements and the new features of Android 2.3 Gingerbread platform.

The announcement was published on Motorola's official forums and informs DROID 2 Global users that Gingerbread is now rolling out in phases.

This means that the update will be received OTA (over the air), but users can also check for it manually by going to Menu / Settings / About phone / System updates.

However, as Motorola already confirmed the update will not be available for all DROID 2 Global owners, so if you are one of those users who didn't receive the update, you should check back later or wait for the upgrade notification.

Besides bringing the firmware to Android 2.3 Gingerbread, the software update version 4.5.607.A956.Verizon.en.US includes numerous enhancements and new features meant to increase the performance of the smartphone.

Enhancements:

- New App to manage all of your downloads from web browsing, email attachments and other apps; - New ability to enter numbers and symbols with keyboard shortcut combos, instead of having to change to the numeric keyboard mode; - New capability to select a word via press-hold. A second press of the selected word copies the selected characters; - New widgets, icons and screens with refreshed colors; Email and Messaging:

- Exchange Active Sync calendar events created on the device will now push to your PC calendar; - POP3/IMAP emails now show the correct date stamp.

After downloading and installing the update, users will notice several new applications, including: Google Books, Accuweather, Amazon MP3 Store, Blockbuster, and Adobe Flash Player 10.2.
