Motorola, Inc. recently talked about the progress it managed to make on Time Division Duplex Long-Term Evolution (TD-LTE) commercialization. The company announced collaborations with operators on TD-LTE trials that would be conducted during the ongoing year. The trials are meant to demonstrate the company's commitment to TD-LTE so as to meet future needs of operators in China, as well as those of carriers around the world. The company also stated that it hoped to be able to accelerate the “delivery of the personal mobile media experiences globally.”

Motorola is one of the leaders in LTE RAN contributions, and it announced that it supported both TD-LTE and Frequency Division Duplex LTE (FDD-LTE). In addition, the phone maker also revealed its plans for an LTE ecosystem that would support early deployments from the fourth quarter of 2009 to mid-2010.

“Motorola has always been an innovator and pioneer in the mobile telecommunications industry and has extensive knowledge and experience across multiple OFDM-based wireless interfaces including WiMAX and LTE,” said Mohammad Akhtar, vice president and general manager, Home and Networks Mobility China. “Motorola is leveraging its success in OFDM to design a common LTE platform that is capable of supporting FDD and TDD, bringing to market early and field-proven end-to-end LTE solutions to support TDD and FDD deployments.”

The phone maker has world-class R&D facilities, among which a team in China that works with major operators in the country so that the company has insights into the local needs. In addition, Motorola is also able to offer several competitive advantages in LTE, courtesy of its extensive OFDM expertise, while also being involved in global trial engagements.

The company is a member of the LTE/System Architecture Evolution (SAE) Trial Initiative (LSTI), an industry group that is focused on speeding the commercial and inter-operable next-generation LTE mobile broadband systems through partnerships between leading industry players all around the world.

Motorola’s LTE solution includes the company's OFDM broadband platform along with a selection of radio options among which MIMO and smart antennas can be spotted. The company's portfolio includes frame based-mounted radios, remote radio heads and tower top radios, which are able to support a wide range of LTE deployment scenarios across various spectrum bands.
