“Modular” is another word that can describe the concept

It might not be on the same level as the 4D printed self-assembling / shapeshifting products I wrote about the other day, but Motorola has a very interesting new project to share with us all.

Said project is called Project Ara and defines a self-assembling phone.

Motorola seems to have used Lego as an inspiration here. Its idea is that it could 3D print various phone components and let customers choose which one to buy and put together into a smartphone.

The battery, the keyboard, the display, the circuit board, all of them should be possible to sell standalone.

It's a sort of opposite movement to the one currently dominating the tech industry really. Most IT companies are trying to integrate as many features as possible inside single chips and devices, but Motorola's idea relies on division of tasks, or at least maintaining the current blueprints.
