To make it in the crowded tablet market, Motorola might have to innovate a lot

Motorola has just published a new patent which details a new tablet/phablet device of sorts with rollable properties.

Back in November 2013, a report coming out of Asia claimed Motorola might be abandoning the tablet game this year, along with other companies like BlackBerry and HTC.

Motorola’s latest tablet effort, the Xoom saw the light of day almost two years ago, and since then the company hasn't made any attempts to come back with something new.

But in a recent interview, Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside has revealed the company is not done with tablets, far from it. According to the official, the company might be attempting to bring Moto Maker type of customization to slates.

And if the word of the Motorola CEO is not enough, last week we saw a couple of patents filled by the device-maker, appear in the wild. In them, we found details about a new device seemingly equipped with a 3D display.

Now, after toying with the idea of 3D displays, Motorola has moved on to something else. And it involves tablets with rollable displays that could be used as smartphones, too (via PatentBolt).

Even crazier, the devices in question, could function as illuminated signs, flash-like gadgets or could illuminate only the parts of the screen which are touched by the users.

Their built-in sensors will be capable of recognizing where the user’s face is located, in order to alter the size and position of the text accordingly.

Motorola has filed a patent for this tech, so we can take a glimpse at some sketches showing the display can be rolled into a tube-like or oblique shape with the display being the outer surface or inner surface, depending on the users’ preference.

Motorola isn't the only company apparently pushing for innovation here, as Samsung has also been spotted filling a patent for a tablet featuring a curved display of sorts.

Motorola certainly has an open field here for experimentation, but don’t expect a futuristic device like that to come out any time soon. At this point launching a Moto Maker customizable tablet makes more sense for the company.
