Motorola just announced, through its strategic venture capital arm, Motorola Ventures, that it has made an equity investment in the Australian venture backed company Tilefile Limited, which owns an innovative social media platform that allows users and communities to connect via a "content-neutral" media format. No financial terms regarding the investment were disclosed.

"It is clear that Tilefile is powering the next generation of social interaction around media through its unique and content neutral approach," said Reese Schroeder, managing director at Motorola Ventures. "Our investment reflects our commitment to innovative companies, such as Tilefile, as they strive to seamlessly connect people and communities."

"Motorola's investment will enable us to continue to strengthen the Tilefile vision and meet the needs of our rapidly-growing user base," said David Bolliger, Chief Executive Officer of Tilefile Limited. "A Tilefile is a piece of media wrapped in people. For this we had to build the foundations for an entire new platform. The Tilefile .com web application is just the beginning. We intend to see the Tilefile format make its way to at least three types of screens."

The platform that Tilefile developed packs audio, photos and video into a single content-neutral format, called "Tile". Each Tile gathers around it social activity. The "front" of a Tile file is the media while the "back" is represented by the community, this distinction resulting in a less fragmented media experience. Instead of browsing through Internet pages, users are offered a non-linear view of various "social media packages" appropriate for both web and phone. Tiles can be connected between them to form combinations that can be shared or launched with ease to other web locations. The social activity gathered around the Tiles goes wherever the Tiles go. Tilefile desires to connect people and communities in a continuous play of sharing, messaging and publishing.
