Mobile phone carrier Verizon Wireless is reportedly gearing up for the launch of a new smartphone that would be included in its already popular DROID family of devices, namely the Motorola DROID X2, a handset which made it to the headlines a few times before.

According to some of the latest reports on this handset, Motorola and Verizon would plan on making it available for purchase with a touchscreen display capable of offering a qHD resolution, or 540 x 960 pixels.

This contradicts previous news that the smartphone would be nothing more than a minor update for the DROID X, and that it would sport a WVGA resolution display.

Apparently, a person currently testing the Motorola DROID X2 has uploaded some photos of the device, and they could be considered proof of the said higher screen resolution.

A screenshot of what would be a Motorola handset running under Google's Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system is shown as being displayed in Firefox, and the info that the browser seems to offer on the photo itself would suggest that aforementioned 540 x 960 resolution for the screen.

It should be noted that no confirmation on this emerged for the time being, and that it might all prove false alarm in the end, so we'll take it with a grain of salt for the time being.

However, the existence of an Android-based smartphone that sports the name of Motorola DROID X2 seems to have been already confirmed.

According to the guys over at Pocketnow, there have been a series of photos with a handset called DROID X2, which features an 8-megapixel photo snapper, which suggests that the device is as real as it can be.

The original Motorola DROID X was launched last year on Verizon Wireless' airwaves with Android on board, and managed to become one of the most popular devices on the carrier's airwaves.
