U.S.-based handset manufacturer Motorola has recently published its Q1 2011 earnings, with the manufacturer seeing an unexpected increase in revenue, as well as a healthy growth when it comes to the number of mobile devices shipped.

Motorola reports that it has shipped almost 9.3 million mobile devices, including 4.1 million smartphones and 250,000 tablets.

That's a substantial increase from last year when the manufacturer shipped 8.5 million mobile devices, but only 2.3 million smartphones.

The company's earnings are also on the rise, as Motorola reported net revenues of $3.0 billion, up 22% from Q1 2010. Mobile devices revenues are also up 30% from Q1 2010 to $2.1 billion.

According to the official report, Motorola Mobility has ended Q1 2011 with a positive operating cash flow of $107 million.

In the first quarter, we reached a major milestone in our history by becoming a new independent, public company. We enhanced our product portfolio by delivering compelling experiences with the launch of Motorola ATRIX and Motorola XOOM, as well as offering unique end-to-end video solutions for the home,” said Sanjay Jha, chairman and chief executive officer, Motorola Mobility.

It's interesting to mention that analysts have predicted that Motorola's XOOM tablet sales are disappointing and that it may prove to be a total fiasco for the manufacturer.

Although some analysts predicted that the company only managed to sell around 25,000 XOOM tablets, the company's report shows ten times the predicted number of XOOM tablets that have been shipped in Q1 2011.

However, the things might not be as bright as they seem at first glance, as Motorola can only report about the number of devices they ship, but cannot come up with the total number of XOOM tablets that have been actually sold.

To make things clearer, Motorola stated that its inventory stocks are constantly dwindling, which means that people have actually started buying the first Honeycomb tablet available on the market.
