This must be why the number of motherboard announcements has gone down

Over the past few months, some may have noticed that motherboard makers have launched fewer models for consumers than in previous years.

With the desktop market playing second fiddle to notebooks, and notebooks, in turn, losing ground to tablets, demand has gone down and, as a consequence, suppliers have become more reserved.

Now, it has been reported that makers of motherboards have shifted their focus. Diverted resources, as it were.

Instead of consumer platforms, they are more interested in embedded and server models. Or at least, they are more interested in the latter two than they used to be.

The scale of the market segments isn't as large as the consumer front, but the gross margin is high enough to ensure the survival of businesses if they play their cards right.
