Seagate seems to not be slowing down much as it has brought forth the Barracuda Green HDD line just a day or so after the Constellation.2, though this new series is aimed at consumers instead of the enterprise market.

Not keen on letting Hitachi grab all the spotlight, what with its launch of more than one 3TB HDD, Seagate brought out its newest “Green” HDD line.

Known as Barracuda Green, the new collection is composed of five 3.5-inch drives, two with the SATA 6.0 Gbps interface and the rest with the SATA 3.0 connection.

The two SATA 6.0 Gbps drives have capacities of 1.5TB and 2TB, respectively, while the other three come in 1TB, 1.5TB and 2TB.

All of them are built with low halogen components, for a lower environment footprint, and 70 percent of materials can be recycled.

“Not only do Barracuda Green drives offer environmental improvements in power consumption and material usage, but these drives are also among the first hard drives from Seagate to offer SmartAlign technology,” said Dave Mosley, Seagate executive vice president of Sales, Marketing and Product Line Management.

“This is important because the industry is transitioning to 4K sector formatting called Advanced Format to improve capacities and maintain strong error correction,” Mosley added.

“However, the transition to Advanced Format without SmartAlign technology can be complex and require additional integration steps and software utilities to avoid performance degradation,” he went on to saying.

“SmartAlign technology removes these concerns and makes this transition virtually invisible for our customers,” the executive VP concluded.

The SATA 6.0Gbps models have a cache memory of 64MB are already supposedly selling for 78 Euro (1.5TB) and 90.45 Euro (2TB).

The other three Barracuda Green have a cache of 32MB and should be listed soon, though their prices aren't yet known.
