Johnny Depp’s most recent films were panned by critics and shunned by his once-loyal fans, to the point where, when “Mortdecai,” his latest, was about to come out, people were talking about how badly he needed a “comeback.”

“Mortdecai” was not it.

After flops and underperformers like “The Rum Diary,” “Dark Shadows,” “The Lone Ranger,” and “Transcendence,” one of the most disappointing releases of 2014, “Mortdecai” opened to a little over $4 million (€3.52 million) in US.

For comparison, the film was made on a $60 million (€52.9 million) budget, and Depp himself scored a bigger paycheck than what it made in its opening weekend, with rumors saying he made anywhere between $10 million (€8.8 million) and $20 million (€17.6 million) on that role.

Page Six is now saying that word on the street is that Depp is very upset about how badly “Mortdecai” performed on the domestic market, so he’s thinking of switching his longtime agent for a new one, even though he’s famous for ignoring advice from his management as regards his career choices.

Depp has been with United Talent Agency’s Tracey Jacobs since his “21 Jump Street” days in 1998, and together they weathered many a storm, including the initial phase in Depp’s movie career, when he couldn’t seem to be able to go mainstream despite delivering flawless work.

Right now, the report claims, Depp is looking to book Rick York as an agent: York’s most famous clients include Leonardo DiCaprio and Scarlett Johansson, two stars with an incredible trajectory especially in more recent years.

Depp’s spokeswoman has already denied the report, but in Hollywood, there’s never smoke without a fire. That’s a well-known fact.
